Ok I cheered reading this because the gel of Spike has been formed and he now knows who he is and who he wants to be and does not give a damn foe anyone's opinion and is seeking out the thrill of the fight. He's not quite the Spike we all know and love yet but I'm giddy at the little bit of the evil boy I love beginning to show.

Author's Response: You're right, he still isn't quite the Spike we know from the show. But he is on the path to becoming that person. I think, deep down, he's still William (well, an evil version of William). It's only that now he has begun to form that protective shell Spike carried with him through the years. Great style in how you are choosing to develop William into Spike. he last few chapters have been dark but they needed to go as low as he could go to rise him up into a whole new persona. From his dressing to stick a finger up at what are Angelus rules and regulations and then going against Angelus in doing whatever he pleases while Angelus is still trying to make a show of himself being in charge Spike could pretty much could care less and sort of roles his eyes to the whole thing and goes out looking for his own entertainments. I simply loved this line “Nobody talk anymore. I’m right knackered.” it was too perfect in a Spike like thing to say and just Angelus reaction to the whole thing. Drusilla was perfect also in her amusement in the whole thing much like a sibling is proud in defiance to a fellow parent.
I'm very excited the story is getting to the rebellious becoming of Spike and you let us see more and more of his inner workings and thoughts I always felt that was over looked by Joss.
I can't wait till you add more to this it is just super reading.

It has to be hard writing for Dru cause she is most child like when nol being evil and you have made her almost sweet to Spike. Even though she is unable to protect Spike she is entertained by him and his antics is pushing Angelus. I always thought from the show Drusilla hated Angelus but he was all she had and he treated her terribly. I am glad she has William to see her thru she made a good choice in him. I love reading this story of how Spike became Spike it's very unique and everyone should read this

Author's Response: I got the feeling (from the AtS episode "Darla") that the reason Drusilla picked William was because she sensed in him the willingness to nurture. She had little attention from Angelus and Darla, and virtually no affection from them. William was a softer personality, very protective of women, and I think Dru knew that. Although my Spike is not in love with Dru, the way canon Spike was, he still has that desire to take care of her ... and that's something she needs. I'm glad you liked the chapter. Excellent portrait of the motivations and circumstances that led to Spike's rebellious search for violence. Both fight scenes were wonderfully vivid and brutal. Spike's nonchalant reaction at his rescue gave me a happy shiver, and I delighted in his placing his muddy boots between Darla and Angelus and just dropping off to sleep.

It's wonderful that in this rebirth, Spike has found it in himself to forgive Dru and even understand her actions. You've made her a sympathetic character once more while you've kept Angelus's villainy simmering nicely. That last image and Angelus' incredulous line made me laugh out loud.

This was another tight, richly detailed chapter that flowed seamlessly from scene to scene.

Author's Response: Thanks so much, Brunettepet. I'm glad you liked it. :) I always had a lot of empathy for Dru. It wasn't her fault she was insane, and I honestly think she did love Spike. When she hurt him, she did it unthinkingly, and when she left him, it was only because she saw that he was no longer in love with her the way he once had been. Even though my Spike doesn't have the same passionate feeilngs for Dru that canon Spike did, he does love her. In a non romantic and non sexual way, he cares for her. And, like William, he likes to shelter and protect the women he cares about.

Trust Spike to look into the eye of the storm and spit right into its eye! I see a mine shaft in their future and info on a Slayer and finding out what one is coming his way soon. This made my morning at work here :)

A+++++ Ok I feel like a Ebay rating but hey this story is above and beyond in the making of the monster in our man William all tongue and cheek and moxie. I loved him bringing Drusilla into the bar I lust laughed out loud over that.
