I loved the update. Great sparring. And now that Buffy has really let the cat out of the bag, and Spike in "run away" mode, I can't wait to see where this will lead. Just like the boxing, they are coming to blows from all angles. Buffy is adept and comes at him cleanly, without preamble or pretension: she loves and fights with purpose and no guile. Spike, on the other hand, now has the distinct and ugly feeling of anxiety and guilt - and with it the inevitable back-pedalling; he's playing dirty. Underhand fighting gets him the points; blunt, cruel words make sure that finally, the young, impressionable girl gets his point. Buffy's found that hole in his heart without even trying but he won't let her fill it, for then where will he be? Dispossessed of life as he knows it, without the wife who carelessly shares him and endangering the facade of domesticity that has hidden the lie. All nornal for him, it's what he's used to; all that he has known. Spike hasn't found the hole in Buffy's heart because it is he who is creating it; he has shown her passion and friendship and a sense of belonging without considering her naivite or susceptible age. Gotta feeling that the laughter stops right here.

I don't think Spike is the only genesis of Buffy's wounded spirit. She has a lot working against her, poor thing. but he definitely is adding to it.

Author's Response: it's funny, because I've gotten that from people on SR a couple times, and I'm not entirely sure where it's coming from. good thought, but my old creative writing teacher always said the real challenge is to keep all your characters alive, so Dru will be living to a ripe old loopy age.

I can't help myself to think that it's only a beginning. Buffy suffers. Spike suffers. Dru... Hum... Can a person without heart suffer? Well, it seems to me that pain is unavoidable for each characters (except Dru, sorry ;)!)in this story. No way out.
But hope in the end? Buffy deserves it.
Dru. She is very understanding. Too understanding? Very suspect. Is it possible that she has had something in mind, since the beginning? (To blackmail his husband to have a perfect divorce?)
I'm curious. Good job :)!

yeah, Spike is finally getting the picture of the fact that he hasn't just been fucking her...well, ever, truthfully. there was always something else going on there. and to his credit, it's a pretty darn confusing situation. he never meant for this to go there.

Oh! And I need to say two more things. First, I am past chapter 1 and I love angst and danger and the twirling of mustaches. Age of consent is wickedly difficult in the US. There are all kinds of clauses. I just read it at 16 for Washington with no disclaimers. I'm in California, where it's absolutely 18. But whether you get prosecuted for statutory rape legally has to do with how many years are between the two people. A boy of 18 who has sex with his 17 year old girlfriend is pretty safe. A guy of 25 is going down. But I know how it is. I'm writing a story right now with lots of legal issues in it, and I just randomly picked New York as my starting point, assuming, stupidly it turns out, that NY would be a progressive state where teenage parenting is concerned. Boy was I wrong. I often wish I'd chosen Illinois, where things are much better, but oh well. Anyway, the legal research is a bitca, and I empathize. So for the sake of your story, we'll just declare the age of consent in Washington as 18 and move along. I still adore your story and your story-telling style. Keep going with this, I am now an avid fan. :-)

Okay, I do love this story, but you do have me puzzled. They're in Seattle? That's in Washington. And the age of consent in Washington is sixteen, not eighteen. So although it's totally creepy in a 'she's young, you're married, you're her employer and using her kinda way', it's not illegal. In California, where the show was located, the age of consent is 18, and she'd be jail bait. Just sayin'. :-)

secondly, oops! hahahaha. the decision to stick it in Seattle was so random. my brain is there right now because my sister is moving there as we speak. until I started this fic, I actually didn't know that anywhere in the US had an age of consent younger than 17, although I knew the UK did. someone on LJ pointed out to me that it was 16 in Ohio, but you're the first to point that out for Washington. ferk. haha. we'll just pretend it's not an issue.
the funny thing is, I wonder what the specifics of the law are. In Texas (where I'm originally from), the age of consent is 17, but only if your partner is 21 or younger. if your partner is 21 or older, the age of consent is 18. at least, that's what we were always told.
